Days 3 and 4: Oakley, KS and Denver, CO

First, Happy New Year!

I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday, because of some buy thing that were going on.

Thursday, we woke up in St. Louis and went to the Gateway Arch on the way west. It was a nice museum.  The best part, of course, is going to the top. The problem is, Katelyn is deathly afraid of heights. So, I just took her to all the park ranger her told her its not scary. She was reluctant still. My solution: Buy her a ticket and make her go up anyways. The ride up is fun, and a little nerve-racking. However, once you get to the top you don’t even feel that high up – just a really good view of St. Louis. Katelyn agreed and wasn’t so sacred. Well, until the top started to sway from the wind. So we got down.

From there we drove through Kansas City and past Topeka, KS. I wish I could say we drove through more – but it was just the plains of Kansas. We went further then originally planned. We felt good and there was nothing stopping us. We had the foresight to check the weather ahead of us and knew there was a storm coming. Eventually, we ended up in the town of Oakley. We only stopped because it was only of the towns we were thinking about and about 1/2 mile from the exit snow started coming down pretty hard.

I took a time lapse of the storm – I’ll but it up at some point.

Anyways, next day (yesterday New Years Eve) we drove to Denver. It was only a couple hundred miles away. We stopped in Colby KS because we could – and then in Limon, CO to get some lunch. A trucker stopped us and was being kind of creepy but w/e.

Most of the drive sucked. We went 15 under because the wind was just blowing the car all over and blowing so much snow the visibility got down to nothing at points.

Got to Denver. Spent a long time trying to find a cheap place for the next couple of days.  Then we went to the mall that was next to our hotel. Hung out for a couple of hours there. Then we tried to drive back and TomTom took us through the worst route ever. My car was going everywhere. It was awful. 2 miles tooks us 30 – 45 min.

Then it was time to celebrate the new year. We ordered pizza and wings. Started to watch Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin. Of course, they were counting down the new year in NY – here it happens 2 hours later. So it was about 9:45 our time and we both fell  asleep and woke up 15 min after the ball drop. Of course. So overall not very exciting but at least I am only 3 or so hours from my final destination.

Today we are talking about going to Rocky Mountain National Park. Depends on weather.

The pictures are loading now of the trip so far. They can be viewed here:

once you tell me that the roads are fine and that you are not having any trouble driving….it’s probably best to NOT post that your car was all over the road and that visibiliy was zero. I’m just sayin’.
