My Top 5 Favorite Drugs

28 06 2010

Ok. So I love drugs, and I know I am a geek. So I sat down and decided to come up with the coolest drugs I have come across.

5) Statins

What they are?

Did you know that Lipitor is the top grossing drug of all time? Or that Simvastatin was the 2nd most prescribe drug of the last year? If you haven’t heard of the statins you must be living under a rock.

Why they’re cool.

To me, statins have one of the coolest mechanisms of actions. They block the rate limiting step of cholesterol synthesis, HMG CoA Reductase. But that’s not all. The liver detects the lower levels of cholesterol and in turn it up regulates receptors to grab on to the cholesterol in the blood stream and use it to make bile acids.

1 Week, 2 Week, This Week, Next Week

22 06 2010

Next Thursday I will leave for Washington D.C. to begin one of six rotations. It’s hard to imagine that I have gotten this far, and how little time is left. But I am sure my ACPHS classmates will all agree, the end came to quick.

So, what should I do now? It would be cheesy and clichéd to talk about how I am beginning some great adventure, or how I am about to embark on some magnificent journey that will affect the rest of my life. No, instead I will quote a great and simple story to summarize my future.

Dr. Seuss once said, “We see them come. We see them go. Some are fast. Some are slow. Some are high, and some are low.” Sure, maybe the Doc was talking about fish, but I think he could have said the same about the weeks of a year. Time will fly by, and sometimes it will crawl slower than a Dr. Meek lecture. Regardless, I should cherish the time I have left. Because in about a year, no matter of how ready I am, I will have to grow up.
